Life’s Crossroad by Gong YueBin

Those who know are wise. Those who know themselves are enlightened.
Laozi (Lao Tzu)

Along the Yellow River

I was born along the Yellow River, and I had a dream to travel from its source someday. The dream was not realized until I left China after living there for 40 years. But I made happened while I am living in Sacramento.

My childhood malnutrition set me a weak physical foundation and my addictive work habits destroyed my health. Without exception, I have suffered from a physical disorder and the vicious circle reformed again as it was a curse after I did the four projects, Life’s Crossroad, Black Hole, Nations, and Site 2801. Especially, when the exhibition of my project Site 2801 at Crocker Art Museum was done, my health condition declined to the point that my doctor warned me must stop all the heavy and hard work. For my own health, I decided to travel to challenge my physical body and my art future.

My trip started from Beijing first to Tibet, and last four months passing along eight provinces around Yellow River with whole distance of 5400 kilometers. During the whole trip, I indulged in mother nature and brought myself to deeper thinking. Any modern technology, such as camera, computer, or cell phone were kept far away from me. My drawings became all instant, fresh, and nature; What’s the true meaning of the Yellow River as to Chinese? What’s the diverse value of Chinese art culture as to the world? Finally, I found it in my last stop, Tai Chi (Wu Dang) mountain.

The Yin and Yang in Tai Chi represent the relationship between Chinese and Yellow River. At same time, it applies to the relationship between the nature and human being. Tai Chi is the perfect example of living and keeping harmony with our planet. Tai Chi is using the nature energy through between body and earth. The smoothness, softness, and contentiousness are the spirit of the Tai Chi. Tai Chi is not only keeping our body system in the balance but also calm anxious nerve as well

I hope my understanding and my art language derived from the Tai Chi and it could leave my audience a dose of wisdom.

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
John 8:12

As we navigate our way through the broken glass of life, are we able to stop and see beauty, creativity and opportunity in the most un-likely locations? South Stockton, California – in the minds of most people – is the epitome of throw away society. When the world throws us away we need to seize the opportunity and take advantage of our creative potential to recycle ourselves.

joyREFRESH

JOY is a very subjective concept that can morph and seem ever changing, however we simple have to be honest and ask ourselves the question are we happy at this moment and what is the source of our JOY. When we define it in such simple terms, we may be able to discern how to create or allow ourselves to experience more of our personal avenue to JOY. Can we simply pay attention to our senses of hearing, smell and sight? We may simply like hearing the sound on running water, smell the fragrance of a orange blossom or enjoy the sight of a sunrise in a favorite location. As we pay attention to our natural appreciations we begin to realize that most often our JOY is going un-noticed. As we begin to notice the gift of JOY, we can allow our senses to access our JOY center at any moment and have a deeper experience of gratitude and appreciation for the most simple of life experience as a precious rich moment of JOY opportunity.

gardenWATER

Those who know are wise. Those who know themselves are enlightened.
Laozi (Lao Tzu, Lao Tse, Lao Tsu)

In a world that often seems more interested in business and production, we might ask the question, “Are people important”. Have we lost our human connection? If so how can we get it back? We could begin by just thinking about ways to relax and settle the racing thoughts in our mind. With stress being the chief problem in the world, a simple solution could be to learn ways to develop our creative imagination.
gardenWATER is a meditation instillation designed to create an opportunity for us to focus on the sight, sound and experience of water. Water is our true essence and foundation for our being. With about 70% of our bodies make up being H2O, we have a natural affinity for it’s healing qualities. Sitting beside a stream, on the beach or beside a river creates an opportunity for healing from our daily stress. With busy lives, it’s often not possible to go to these locations, so we have created a virtual experience for the healing qualities which we titled gardenWATER.

graceETERNAL

A singer starts by having his instrument as a gift from God… When you have been given something in a moment of grace, it is sacrilegious to be greedy.
Marian Anderson

As I look out of the window of my home I have the opportunity to be reminded of the characteristics of my Grandparents that I admired the most, and that was their attitude of Grace. An almond tree is exploding in spring blossoms to announce the coming of the Spring Season. This tree was planted by my Grandmother from a seed. When I was a child I thought that a seed could never grow into a full grown tree and produce fruit for generations to come, however I was wrong. The question is how do we plant the spirit of grace in our soul to feed generations to come? My Grandmother was not a person who liked to spend a lot of time in the home, however she loved working in the garden, preparing the soil and watching things grow. My Grandfather loved visiting family and helping repair things, provide support and do whatever he could to lend a helping hand. How can we live a life of Grace in a world that at times seems unkind? We could begin by asking ourselves what is free inspiration and how can we discern the intent God has for our life. We can take it step further and ask how can we be the face of gods Grace in everything we think, do and say.

mexican heritage center & gallery exhibition

There are so many gems lying around and no one seems to ever take notice of them. The Mexican Heritage Center and Gallery is one of those gems. After seeing a movie recently we ran into a friend in the parking lot. She encouraged us to stop in an take a look at the Center’s new show. We were surprised at what we saw. The Center has a wonderful space for a gallery (bright and spacious) and the center has a lot of activities that they host as well as art shows.
On November 26th they had an artist symposium for their current show “Man Against Nature”. The show is the combined work of 3 artists, 2 painters and a sculpture. The art is modern and has strong elements of the artist’s heritage. Not only is the art extremely well done but having the rare opportunity to talk at length with the artists and get their perspective as to their inspirations and influences was so much more interesting than just looking at the art itself.
